RESUMO

Research conducted by the veterinary education community is critical to continual improvement of educational outcomes. Additionally, research productivity is one metric in promotion and tenure decisions. We sought to identify challenges encountered or anticipated when undertaking or planning veterinary educational research (VER), to learn how these challenges might be overcome, and to synthesize tips for success from those who have performed VER. A branching survey was developed and deployed along the authors' worldwide veterinary education contacts in a cascading manner. The survey collected quantitative and qualitative information from participants who had performed VER and those who planned to perform VER in the future. The 258 participants represented 41 countries. Of the participants, 204 had performed VER (79%) and 54 planned to in the future (21%). The median time spent teaching was 14 years, and median time performing VER was 5 years. The most commonly reported challenges in performing VER were lack of funding, lack of time, and difficulties encountered when undertaking a study, including data collection, analysis, and publishing. When asked about overcoming the challenges, a major theme emerged around people, who provided expertise and mentoring. The most commonly reported tip for success was collaboration; 73% of experienced researchers reported people as most helpful upon beginning VER. Collaborators provided diverse help with ideas, study design, statistics, and other aspects. These results suggest that institutions can offer support to academics in the form of small grants, protected research time, writing workshops, and mentorship to assist with the production of meaningful VER.

To evaluate the localization of functional deficit area in epileptogenic zones of the brain in seven refractory and seven non-refractory epilepsy dogs using technetium 99m labeled with ethyl cysteinate dimer and interictal single photon emission computed tomography [99mTc-ECD SPECT] co-registration with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Regions showing perfusion deficits in the SPECT images were analyzed by using the standard semiquantitative evaluation method to compare the level of cortical perfusion to the maximum number of counts within the cerebellum (max C), considered the area of reference. This study showed that SPECT imaging revealed abnormalities in several regions of the brain in both epilepsy groups. The refractory epilepsy dogs showed more frequency area of hypoperfusion in temporal lobe than non-refractory group with not statistically significance (P=0.28). The result suggests the lesion in temporal might be relevance with refractory epilepsy in canine patients.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the most common cancer in northeastern Thailand. At present, effective diagnosis of CCA either in humans or animals is not available. Monitoring the development and progression of CCA in animal models is essential for research and development of new promising chemotherapeutics. Ultrasonography has been widely used for screening of bile duct obstruction in CCA patients. In this study, we preliminarily investigated the applicability of ultrasonography to monitor the development and progression of CCA in Syrian golden hamsters (n=8) induced by Opisthorchis viverrini (OV)/dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) administration. Ultrasonography and histopathological examination of hamsters was performed at week 0, 20, 24 and 28 of OV infection or at the start of water/Tween-80 administration to controls. The ultrasonographic images of liver parenchyma and gallbladders of OV/DMN-induced CCA hamsters showed sediments in gallbladder, thickening of gallbladder wall, and hypoechogenicity of liver parenchyma cells. The ultrasonographic images of liver tissues were found to correlate well with histopathological examination. Although ultrasonography does not directly detect the occurrence of CCA, it reflects the thickening of bile ducts and abnormality of liver tissues. It may be applied as a reliable tool for monitoring the development and progression of CCA in animal models in research and development of new promising chemotherapeutics for CCA.

Humans are thought to acquire Toxoplasma infection by three major routes: ingesting food and water contaminated with oocysts from cat excreta, consumption of under-cooked infected meat, and transplacental transfer. Congenital clinical toxoplasmosis in the newborn indicating definite transplacental transmission had been reported in Thailand, whilst studies concerning infection due to the other two routes were inconclusive. Since the way domestic cats live and eat and also the eating behavior of Thai people differ from those in the West, we conducted a sero-epidemiological study of T. gondii in cats and their owners in Bangkok metropolitan area. Among 327 humans, the prevalence of Toxoplasma antibody was 6.4% and in 315 cats it was 7.3%. These relatively low prevalence rates may result from the predominantly well-cooked fish and rice diet of stray cats, which congregate in temples where they are fed. Toxoplasma antibody seropositive was associated with living in close proximity to seropositivity cats [OR (95% CI) = 5.43 (1.28-23.04); p=0.01]. Risks were increased in and around temples, particularly if courtyards were of earth or grass, suggesting ground temperature was an important determinant of oocyst survival.
